LARGE is a department that aims to represent artistic research activities at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. The research concept of the university is thus expanded to include a platform that promotes and supports the importance of practice-led research in visual arts, explore its relationship to other disciplines and the broader social context, both locally and internationally.
LARGE focuses on an understanding of artistic research as an in-depth investigation driven by artistic practice. This inquiry need not be formulated exclusively through verbal language, although language can be a central part of it. While an interdisciplinary exchange can and often is central to the process, the contribution of an artistic research project is aimed at the field of art more than at other disciplines. Rather than placing the emphasis on the adjective “artistic” as a method which can be equally deployed by several fields, LARGE is concerned mainly with the role of art practice in artistic research: its ability to create new aesthetic and conceptual spaces, to suggest and imagine alternatives to existing realities, and ultimately to produce new forms of knowledge not in response to other disciplines but alongside them.
